In 2011, a group of Grade 12 students - all avid science learners in their graduating year, gathered together to discuss a school wide event to promote science and share the love and passion they have to future students.
They wanted to showcase the wonderful world of science using experiments and engaging activities to expand the interest of science and arouse curiosity. Using a 'friendly competition' format and enhancing teamwork and collaboration, the Science Olympics was born!
This idea expanded exponentially as the science department became engrossed with the event very quickly. With the department on
board, enthusiastic grade 11 science students soon followed and suddenly the whole school became involved. Subsequently, the first Science Olympics turned out to be a huge
success!
The former grade 12 students have graduated and new groups of grade 12 students - equally, if not more, passionate about science
- continue to carry on the torch and preserve this exciting young tradition.
Since 2011, A.Y. Jackson has successfully hosted 6 Science Olympics accommodating hundreds of students, with added new activities each year showing exciting and innovative facets of science!
Many of the junior high students that participated in the Science Olympics have come to A.Y. Jackson pursuing academics in science. They are taking part as volunteers and even becoming organizers of the Science Olympics movement.
This year, the new group of students have already begun planning to ensure that the upcoming Science Olympics
will be bigger and better than the previous.
